THE WEEK THAT WAS (March 26, 2008)
By: Dir. Bench Sy Chu
Dr. Anthony Rolando T. Golez practically grew up with Rotarians. Early on, he was exposed to the Rotary, participating in civic and social activities as child growing up. Hence, it’s no surprise that he became a full pledged Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmarinas.
A doctor by profession, he served with mostly government agencies throughout his career. Very recently, he was tapped by no less that the Chief Executive herself to be Deputy Presidential Spokesperson.
Dr. Golez offered his insight in the opposition’s options for its “search for truth”.
1. ABOLISH EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE – this can’t be done, as this is part of the country’s constitution. Abolishing this will expose the Chief Executive to undue exploitation. In the spirit of order, this has to stay.
2. JOIN THE RALLIES – Freedom of expression is should be freely exercised. After all, the Voice of the People is supposedly the Voice of God. However, one should be careful on choosing which rallies to attend. Lately, so-called protest rallies, even religious gatherings, are used a propaganda tools by politicians to peddle their own selfish motives.
3. GLORIA RESIGN/SNAP ELECTIONS – Presidential Resignation should be voluntary and not coerced. Current situations still doesn’t offer compelling reasons for a voluntary resignation. Snap elections, being mentioned a lot lately, is an option easier said that done.
4. REFERENDUM – How about we ask the people if they still trust the Chief Executive? Again, this late in the current President’s term, this option may not be logical, much more, economical. Of course, the opposition will be quick to contradict.
5. TRUST THE INSTITUTION – Despite controversies here and there, why not trust the Institution. Believe that it will pull though notwithstanding the Jocjoc Bolante, NBN-ZTE deals, etc. Sure it’s hard, but we Filipinos have gone through worst. For all we know, Presidential Redemption might just be around the corner.
