Club Assembly and Fellowship Day

But to start at the beginning … PE Klink Ang’s invocation was a refreshingly simple restatement of the Four-Way Test. The lone guest was introduced – Ariel de Vera, a high school classmate of President Joe.

Moderator Roger Nicandro then called on President Joe to make the first of the committee announcements, regarding a special activity on August 22nd … “clean fun” (singing? yeah, right) at Air Force One. A very short discussion ensued as to whether spouses were to be invited, and the obvious decision was unanimously reached.

PE Klink Ang then reported on preparations for the golf tournament marking the first leg of the Governor’s Cup, traditionally hosted by the incumbent governor’s home club. This will be held at the Ayala Greenfield Golf & Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna, with a firm booking on Friday Sept 7th, and a waitlisted reservation on the preferred date of Aug 31st.

Then came the main event. Director Mike Clancy, our energetic Quizmaster for the day, announced the rules for an “individual knock-out competition” featuring a series of one-on-one contests with a Champion and Challenger in each of three rounds. So the first order of business was to select a Champion. In an excellent illustration of the adage on “best laid plans …”, the question Mike chose to select the starting Champion was answered by … no one. (This was a question regarding pre-law occupations engaged in by Paul Harris.) Since Mike thought so highly of the intelligence of RCMN members that he didn’t prepare an easier back-up question, he was forced to arbitrarily select as the first defending Champion Director Tony Newnham, who in turn chose Director Robert Syjuco as Challenger.

The first set of fifteen questions were all Rotary-knowledge questions. Quiz format was for the Champion to retain the microphone as long as he answered each question correctly, after which it would be the Challenger’s turn. Tony promptly missed the first question and had to yield the microphone to Robert who eventually got a few answers right. After consistently missing every question, Tony ended up with the microphone at the 15th and last question, which he proceeded to answer correctly for the first time. Under Mike’s rules, whoever has the microphone at the end remains Champion, and so to his great embarrassment, Tony remained Champion for the next round with a net score (right minus wrong) of negative 6!

For the next round of General Knowledge questions, Tony chose Omy Duran as Challenger, and the latter eventually prevailed to remain Champion for the third round (Filipiniana), with Challenger Joey Diokno.

Scorer Bob Hecks then announced the final results. Tied for “Brains of the Day” were Tony and Omy with 6 points each. Mike promised (threatened?) to organize more contests, leading to selection of a Brain of the Year.

As the climax of the day’s festivities, the President Nominee for 2009-2010 was announced. All through the quiz contest, votes were being cast and tallied, and the clear winner was the hero of RCMN’s international relations – Chito Frondoso. An unusually subdued Director Chito received the congratulations of all as we filed out to end a most entertaining and educational day.

PN Chito Frondoso is congratulated by Pres. Joe, while Dir. Ian Alas waits for his turn to greet PN Chito.
