Rotary District 3830 and the Rotary Club of Makati North looked good. The club’s attendance was respectable and District Governor Eduardo “Ed” Alvarez (RC Makati West) brought with him a team of three Past Presidents who are active in District affairs this year. Our own PP Tony Chong, District Publicity chief, acted as moderator. The Manila Times had a full-page supplement about the club and its activities, past, present and future intentions.
RCMN’s directors arrived early (well, some did). Pres. Mac updated Gov. Ed on the Club’s situation, including, no doubt, the fact that RCMN has no President-elect to serve in RY 2011/2012. Gov. Ed later asked us to fix this “within 30 days”.
At President’s Time, Pres. Mac particularly emphasized the expansion of RCMN’s ongoing project to supply one meal a day at school to school children who show by their performance and growth rate that they are not getting enough to eat. Some 10 percent of the children (at F.Benitez Primary Schools in Bgy. Sta. Cruz and Bgy. Singkamas, both in Makati) are malnourished” said Pres. Mac. He pledged to increase the number helped to 300 children in both schools, for one year, partly through financial help from our foreign Sister Clubs in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and USA.
Introducing Gov. Ed, PP Ric dela Torre, who has worked with him in District 3830 activities in recent years, saluted Gov. Ed’s “confidence, enthusiasm and professionalism. Ed Alvarez knows how to not compartmentalize his life too much – he’s always doing good.”
Some hot news from Gov. Ed emphasized his message that Rotary today is much more concerned to publicize its activities than in the past. From October 19 “we’re advertising Rotary with posters on buses.” Other new things happening include extension of the Sustaining Paul Harris Fellow scheme – “we would like at least US $100 from every Rotarian” each year to help keep the Rotary Foundation fully functional. Later, Chris Bellinger, PP Porong Herrera and PP Ric dela Torre were awarded Paul Harris medals.
District Governor Ed Alvarez showed how well prepared he is for his year as Rotary District 3830 leader. His past District activities, including District Secretary has given him comprehensive knowledge of the clubs in D.3830. “I know almost everyone in this room,” he remarked. By the time he left he also knew the names of the newcomers.
The District Conference 2011 will be an event to attend, March 18 and 19. PP Noel Laman (RC Makati West) was on hand to tell us about that and also to make sure we reserve December 18 for the District Christmas Party, at which the theme will be New Orleans, the site of the Rotary International Convention in June.
