5th Avenue of Service

Sept. 22, 2010

Our weekly meeting was moved to Zuni last week, due to the New World being booked. Surprisingly, it was quite a big turnout compared to the week before but we managed to cram everyone into Zuni’s function room. Director PJ started out with a thoughtful invocation and since there were no arrangements made for the national anthem, everyone pitched in and sang a Capella. Then we toasted and sang happy birthday to Rotary’s latest celebrant, our treasurer Robert Syjuco.

Next up was President Mac. He informed all of us that his good friend Derek Ramsey, the General Manager of a security firm Guard All, was going to be the guest speaker on October 6. Also, some ex PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) Players were going to attend and help out with the reading programs. Pres Mac also pledged two thousand books to both F Benitez and Barangay Singkamas.

After Pres Mac, PP Klink reminded the group of the Job Fair this coming Saturday, hosted by PP Porong and Klink with the Manila Times. PP Dieter has also told all the Rotarians to mark their calendars for December 8, RCMN’s Christmas party.

PP Joe then proceeded to introduce us to the first guest of the afternoon, Atty. Rosario “Chito” Calixto-Chavez, who also happened to be his classmate. PP Joe described her as, “energetic, industrious, and patient, all the best characteristics of a woman.”
Atty. Chito is currently the District Coordinating Chairman for Youth called “New Generations”. She proudly stated that Youth has been approved as the 5th Avenue of service starting July 2010.

During her presentation, Chito noted a couple of important points for the future of all Rotary clubs. One is that the main goal is to align club goals with district goals. Even more important, the goal is to have children from Interact, progress to become Rotaracts, and eventually fully fledged Rotarians. Being quite ambitious, she also mentioned that they wanted to achieve establishing 84 Rotaract clubs. September is the month for Youth in Rotary. In line with this, Atty Chito also shared that the there were many new district endorsed activities for the youth, including painting, basketball and chess to name a few.

After Atty. Chito’s presentation, RCMN was honored to have the “grant guru” PP Nash as our second guest. PP Nash was there to help RCMN obtain grants before the deadline of September 30 had passed. According to him, the feeding program of RCMN would qualify for funding as a humanitarian type of program because it helps in “improvement of quality of life”. RCMN is certainly grateful to PP Nash for his time and contribution to our humanitarian and educational programs.
