WHAT ARE WE WORTH?

Ariel Rivera’s well-prepared invocation made it clear that we should not think of our worth only in material terms. Indeed, there are many reasons other than material reward which motivate people to work, as our guest speaker also made clear. In his talk “Strategic Compensation Management,” Dr. Noel de Leon, a 25-year veteran of Human Resource management, explained how management often breaks down without sufficient motivation, sufficient understanding or sufficient control.

“I’m into driving desired behavior”, said Dr. de Leon. He outlined the six “magnets that attract people”: inspiring leadership, fun work culture, challenging work, feedback, career growth, fair pay.

Noel de Leon’s credentials are impressive, as his friend Bench Sy Chu pointed out in his introduction of our guest speaker. Noel is a recognized expert in the strategic management of the Human Resource and has designed and implemented various HR-related projects/programs (compensation and rewards, performance management etc.) of many multinational and local organizations across industries and across the region. Today, Noel is a part-time MBA professor in several universities and provides executive coaching, leadership/management training and he facilitates strategic and other organization and leadership development programs.

“Rewards delayed are rewards denied” said Noel in stressing the timing of the right rewards, to the right people for the right reasons. But there are important cultural differences in the countries in SE Asia, and still more in other continents. And by occupation the variations are even greater – incentivizing Rotarians, and pay scales for congressmen were two entertaining questions and answers. For them, of course, it’s not the money – or at least not the salary.

During the President’s Time, Pres. Klink emphasized two important upcoming events after the District Conference at the weekend. They are the District Assembly (DISTAS) on May 9 and our Anniversary ‘Cabaret’ on May 22. Pres. Klink particularly asked incoming RCMN Officers and Directors to attend the DISTAS at AIM.

Regarding the fund-raising Anniversary ‘Cabaret’, we were advised that the proceeds will be divided up mainly to the agreed beneficiary ‘Operation Smile’ with some also going to our projects in Barangays Sta. Cruz and Singkamas, Makati. Chris Bellinger, who is leading ‘Cabaret’ very effectively, asked us to sell 200 tickets and try to get a sponsor to provide raffle prizes. Air France looks likely to provide Hongkong-Paris return tickets.
