Adding More Relevance

Makati North – as you all know – is one of the oldest and most-respected Rotary clubs in District 3830, if not the entire Philippines. Our members, especially the more-experienced ones, have done truly wonderful and generous things in the past. Outside Rotary, our members have also distinguished themselves in their various disciplines.

Yet, our club, like many others, has been in decline over the years. Unlike other clubs, I believe we have all the necessary ingredients to be better. We need to improve – better, perhaps, than what we were in the past – not to win recognition from our fellow Rotarians, but to add more relevance to our participation in Rotary.

I feel that we need not re-invent the wheel, and I’m personally appealing to all the members do to only two things.

1. Attend more (regardless of your membership status), and 2. Recruit one new (or past) member.

Your officers are trying hard to come up with good speakers. Any suggestions to further improve our weekly meetings are always welcome.

The directors are also organizing more fellowships. The dinner at Hooters on Saturday was fun, with seven members (PDG Ato, Robert, Christophe, Joey, Leo, Archie and myself) and two Anns (Vicky and my wife Cecille) attending. More will be planned.

Past President Joe has also organized a golf fellowship on Friday. I hope that the turnout will be better.

Plus, the club is organizing a working visit to Ave Maria Gawad Kalinga Village in Tanay on September 6. We plan to get our hands dirty.

In all these activities – as well as the regular lunch meetings – feel free to bring friends along. They may be prospective members, or just others whom you think will enjoy what we are doing. As they say, the more, the merrier.

We need to step up our recruitment effort, simply because doing so strengthens the club.

In my humble opinion, our club is worth joining because, first of foremost, we are an exceptional Rotary club. And with all due respect to the other clubs, I think we have the best members. Personally, I feel proud to be in company of such fine people.
Congratulate PE Vic

Not long ago, we have overwhelmingly elected Director Vic Austria as President Elect. And naturally, he has not been seen since.

Kidding aside, we need to give Vic support and encouragement. He has grudgingly accepted a great challenge, to lead this club only after a year as member. At the very least, the 22 people who elected him should help look ahead and prepare for his term. It’s never too early to plan.

I was among those who voted for Vic. As I renew my pledge to everyone to work hard during my term, I also promise to work even harder when our PE takes over. Congrats, Vic. I know you’ll do even better than me.
