Club Fellowship

As had been announced at the last weekly meeting, the club is embarking on a fellowship (disguised as an “environmental” project) to help this certain “owl” species called … Hooters.

This bird has found a natural habitat in the recently reclaimed area of the Manila Bay, nestled at the far north end of the massive SM Mall of Asia complex. As you may have heard, this is the same famous Hooters that originated from North America.

Given that owls are nocturnal creatures, the club is organizing a “bird-watching” fellowship activity at 7 p.m., August 9 (a Saturday) where this raptor chose to settle when it migrated to the Philippines. It might interest many of you to know that this activity was inspired by the response to the survey conducted earlier when a number of the members expressed a desire to have more fellowships.

As is customary with all official club activities, your hardworking directors will make all the necessary preparations for a smooth fellowship, and each will pay the so-called Rotary way.

Not to brag or in any way get your sympathy, but yours truly had even gone so far as conduct an ocular inspection of the Hooters’ nesting area to make sure the place is bird-flu free. Before I took this leadership position in the club, I was warned of the many sacrifices your president has to take. Though I must say, I truly relished this one.

Let me caution everyone, however, about what to expect at the Hooters’ nest – because the club aims for good, clean fun and not disappointment men with blue, well, manhoods. The creatures at Hooters is not to be associated with the what we call in Filipino as low-flying pigeons – you know, the kind that some like to oogle at or catch at other places like “White Bird,” which also nests in a nearby area, or the flightless and pricey one that takes off on “Air Force One.” (Note: I used two examples, just to ensure the message gets across regardless of the points of reference that may differ from generation to generation.)

Certainly, we considered the many who wish to volunteer their valuable time to this fellowship activity but are caged by their masters at their home nest. Not to worry. The club plans to make arrangements for the spouses and children to have their own fellowship activity at the Mall – hopefully at least a kilometer or two from where the members will be doing their bird watching. Naturally, we’ll need to have a head count of how many will be participating to make the appropriate arrangements.

Now in plain English

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about: We have a fellowship dinner at 7 p.m. on August 9 at the first and only Hooters restaurant near the SM Mall of Asia. Wives and children may join, but arrangements will be made so they shop nearby while the members do their … duty. Payment is through Rotary way (pay your own dinner), but the club will make the reservations.

As is customary, those who fail to show up risks being talked about by those who attend. Just kidding, of course, but I guess you’ll never know.

The operative words here are: Let’s have some fun together.
