A Night of Generosity and Creativity....

By: Rotary Ann Daisy dela Torre

PP Pabling Calma and spouse Maribel hosted dinner for our visiting sister club guests last July 15 at the Manila Polo Club.

Our friends from RC Hong Kong Island East, RC Raffles City Singapore and RC Shah Alam Malaysia as well as Rotarians and spouses from RCMN enjoyed the Filipino feast specially chosen by the Calmas. It included healthy fare of raw and blanched native veggies for those watching their cholesterols and sugars as well as the ubiquitous lechon and leche flan, trademarks of a special Filipino meal, that are always a treat for everyone.

There was also wine a-plenty. Joe Reano had everyone try the new babies he created: red and white wines from bignay berries and a sweet dessert wine made from bananas. Looks like Joe is branching into a new business in a field that’s always been close to his palate. Pretty soon we will refer to Joe not only as “Dr. Joe, the vet” but also to “Joe the Philippine wine czar”.

It was a night of generous spirits, in the sharing of lives, the sympathetic ear, the energetic and friendly bantering, the food and wine. And then there was also the generous gift for the feeding program of RCMN, to feed a child, build a nation. Vince and Zelie Tan donated a still life painting done by their son J.A.Tan for auction among those in the party. And, after a bid raising exchange between Dr. Chin of RC Raffles City and RCMN Treasurer Robert Syjuco, the painting eventually went to Robert. The painting is special, one among a collection of “personal bests” chosen by J.A. Tan, that would have gone into an Ayala Museum exhibit for his first exhibit there. (By the way, J.A.Tan’s exhibit opened Jul 22 and we encourage all of you to go and be amazed at his talent.)

Our thanks to our generous and gracious hosts Pabling and Maribel, Joe & Choi for the “new” wines and Vince and Zelie for their gift for the soul in J.A.’s painting.
