About 300 jobseekers attended the first free job fair on June 26 that was organized by The Manila Times, the Rotary Club of Makati North (RCMN) in Muntinlupa City and other partners.
The event was the first in a series of job fairs pledged by Past Presidents Porong Herrera and Dante “Klink” Ang II — both of whom wanted to deliver on campaign promises to help fellow Filipinos regardless of the outcome of the last national elections. Herrera is chairman of Bagong Bayan party, which endorsed Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon for the president, while Ang lost in his bid as nominee of the party-list Ahon Pinoy.
Ang is also executive editor, as well as president and chief executive officer of The Times, the oldest national daily newspaper in the country — not to mention also the media partner for the event.
There were a number of other RCMNers who participated in the event, including Director Ariel Rivera, whose company was among the 30 firms who participated in the event. They pledged to join future job fairs organized by the club.
Director PJ Jison was also present to offer BPI automatic teller machine (ATM) cards to the jobseekers, especially recent college graduates.
Rotarian Joseph “Je” Arriola came later to the event after attending the reading program organized by the club in Makati.
Herrera, for his part, invited at least 10 companies to participate. He was at the fair with his two daughters.
Ang invited the company of fellow “Real Good Good” President Bernie Caramba of RC Makati Southwest, Primepower. Primepower had participated in an earlier job fair organized by Ang during the campaign — also held at same venue, the Jesus the Good Shepherd Church.
The church officials, along with its member former Mayor Jaime Fresnedi of Muntinlupa, were so pleased with the event that they suggested having another one in September — and perhaps one every quarter thereafter. Fresnedi and his church donated use of the venue for free.
Ang accepted the suggestion. Also, there is another invitation to have a job fair in Pila, Laguna province.
Those next two events will most likely be September, although firm dates have yet to fixed. For now, The Manila Times is preparing the report for Department of Labor — a requirement for future job fairs.
Meanwhile, it was decided that the June 26 job fair will be credited as an event of President Karl “Mac the Knife” McLean. That means that on the first day on his presidency, the club has had two important projects — the reading event, as well as the job fair.
With President Karl hitting the ground running and early successes, it’s clear that more goods times are the club’s horizon.
