The Week That Was

Our guest speaker, an engaging and articulate advocate for Apple Computer Systems, stimulated a lively discussion about the wonderful ways of 21st century technology for information, communication and entertainment. The successful introduction of a set-menu lunch, which the Club can more easily afford, should helpfully curtail the over-indulgence of the too-tempting buffets of the past. Final arrangements for hosting golfing Rotarians for the IGFR tournament, March 4-9 were announced.
Pres. Porong drew our attention to a letter in ‘Ang Magiting’ from our new Sister Club RC Bacolod Marapara. There’s a big golf event there at the Negros Golf & Country Club March 31/April 1, in which RCBM would like us to be involved. Pres. Porong also mentioned the upcoming turnover on Feb. 23 of four Gawad Kalinga houses in Tanay, Rizal.
More-imminent golf was outlined by DGE Ato Magadia. The international Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians (IGFR) is on next week, March 4 to 9 at Southwoods, Orchard and Wack Wack and we’re hosting it along with RC Green meadows. So there’s no regular RCMN meeting next week, March 7. DGE Ato said that foreign entries were less than expected, so play will be restricted to one golf course. “Regretfully, the Philippines is not attractive to foreign players”, he said. The IGFR Dinner on March 9 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel will be emceed by PP Chet Tan. All RCMNers are invited.
“Apple is characterized best by software”, said guest speaker Joey Alvarez in his presentation “Digital Lifestyle”. Joey is Product Manager for Apple Computer at Microwarehouse Inc. The hardware looks very impressive too. And you can use it out of the box – ready to run. And no viruses even though you can use Microsoft Office on the Tiger operating system – “more advanced than MS Vista”, claimed Joey.
More exciting than the over 4000 business applications which can be run on Mac is the fantastic multi-tasking which can be done, particularly with photographs and music. It’s a whole new world – the camera is even in the screen. Several questions followed. The only ‘not yet’ was in answer to a question from guest Henry Curteis “Can the Mac act like a television?” Not yet.

Before anything else, allow me to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.
Perhaps not a few of you are tired of getting this greeting, which probably swamped your mobile phone and e-mail mailboxes. Given the challenges ahead – the global crisis, its repercussions here, the run-up to the next national elections, and others – maybe it will help to hear more well wishes.
So, happy New Year, damn it!
Seriously, the gloomy forecast suggests that this year Rotary is more relevant. Many of us are already feeling the pinch, and the others are probably bracing themselves for the worst. But in a sense, we are still the lucky ones. Imagine the hardship and anxiety of those with lesser means. No matter how difficult our situation is now, there always seems to be someone else somewhere experiencing something worse.
