The Week That Was
January 10, 2007
By Rtn. Robert Syjuco
It was the first meeting of the year, and for the first time in the newly renovated function room of the Pen. The new rooms looked posh and the food, while mostly the same as before, was actually better tasting. For those who don’t know yet, the rooms were re-done by our very own Pabling Calma. Good job Pabling….
After the invocation, it was a sad moment when we were informed that PP Tony Ortigas was in bad shape, having a recurrance of his cancer, and much worse this time. Our prayers are with you Tony. PP and future District Gov. Ato Magadia then discussed the forthcoming Rotary World Golf Tournament, which our club will be co-hosting with RC Greenmeadows. Big affair, big shots, big bucks.
There was also a memorandum of agreement between RCMN and the Phil. Society for Training and Development, for the 4th LEAP congress. On their 3rd year of involvement, their participation comes in the form of facilitators that manage the 50 or so group discussions of the said affair, among others.
Next came Rotarian of the week, Baby Rotarian Daniel Wiedmer. Daniel is currently an Investment Officer of the ADB, involved in private equity investments. Married to a Filipina, he had a myriad of work experiences in different fields prior to his stint at ADB, some of which took him to places we only watch in Discovery Channel, like Mongolia, Ghana etc. It was very interesting to see how a graduate from the London School of Economics and Kent University went through what most of us RCMNers didn’t go through, variety wise, geographically and otherwise. I wouldn’t mind having to do the same if I was younger….
Next week our speaker will be long lost RCMNer Emilio Zulberti ….

My dear fellow Rotarians with RC Makati North:
Let’s focus on the District’s Annual TRF Testimonial Dinner & Ball, one of the District’s premier Rotary event, that is fast approaching. Again —- the event date and time is Nov. 13, 2009, Friday at 6 pm and venue is at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila. Tickets to the event: P1,000/guest to cover dinner, raffle, & entertainment.
The following information should give you an idea of the extent of RCMN’s participation, so far, in the coming days and up to the actual date of the event:
KARL STUART McKINNON McLEAN
Born in Gibraltar , August 1, 1955 where my dad ran Shell refinery then moved with my family to Hamburg, then London , followed by Holland where I spent 8 years of my life as my father was on the main board of Shell in London.
I went to a Dutch school which was fabulous as the Dutch are the “freeist” nation in the world. As class prefect I sat on the school board with teachers and parents and my vote had the same power as the teachers.
I played a lot of soccer and earlier cricket.
