Less is More?

The meeting last Wednesday at the New World Hotel was small indeed. With no guest speaker and only nine participants, we did not even manage to fill one table.

The lunch discussion revolved around just a few topics – the increasing incidence of dengue, the (low) quality of well-marketed hospitals such as S:t Lukes and the observation that corruption still exists in pockets of the Philippine government (even if the trend seems positive).

The limited number of participants led to a less formal meeting. The President announced that he had been able to secure a grant for our school feeding program from a Las Vegas Rotary Club. There are many possible donors for these programs, and the club needs to expedite work on project descriptions and the website in order to approach these donors.

The President further announced that Dr Chua from Dianne Optical will be the donating lenses for the children in our two schools. What will be needed from the club is funding for the frames.

The third item on the agenda was whether the club should participate in anti-dengue fumigation of the Singkamas & Benitez schools. Although this may seem a good idea, several members opposed the idea as counterproductive and recommended more long-term solutions such as information, education and prevention work. In the end, the meeting decided on trying to sponsor both short-term and long-term solutions for combating dengue in and around the two schools.
