The easy way to win in golf
By: PP Tony Chong
The weather outside Manila Polo Club seemed threatening but early birds PP Peny Reloza and Dir. Jimmy Roa weren’t concerned.
Being the first to arrive, they had control of the “have-to-go-early” table and were in a deep thoughtful discussion on how best to leave if and when the meeting gets to be too exciting. As a cardiologist, Peny knows that too much excitement is bad for the heart.
PP Ric dela Torre walked in and was looking for PP Donnies Alas to congratulate him on his winning the Class–C trophy in a recently concluded golf tournament. When he asked Dir. Tony Newnham, who played in the same tournament, what he thought was Donnies’ magic, we over heard PE Joe Reaňo advancing his theory to IPP Tony Pastelero and PP Rene Magadia that Donnies won handily because he could see the ball more clearly because of the fact that his head and shoulder are much, much closer to the ball than Tony’s.
PP Dieter Brueckner who was seated right next to Tony N., thought that over and seemed to have nodded in agreement. Dir. Bob Hecks of course could only give Rtn. Vic Magdaraog a knowing look because he seems to know that the real secret lies in Donnies’ “short-distancing.”
Guest speaker PP Marge Lamberte (of RC Paraňaque Metro, an all-woman club) could only smile in amusement at the seeming confusion, and appeared thankful that she hasn’t joined a male-dominated Rotary Club. Her topic was The Rotary Four Way Test and her style of talk was supposed to be interactive. So she called on some of the employees who came with their bosses. Omy Duran’s secretary Noemi Facto, when asked what she thought of the first test (Is it the Truth?) wanted to know if it’s true her boss will really give her the all-expense paid vacation to Panglao for agreeing to come to the meeting. And Marifi Baltazar and Gie Bolisay, both working for Pres. Porong Herrera, wanted to know if the third test (Will it be Beneficial to all concerned) covers their Christmas bonuses plus other Christmas-related shopping expenses. Whew! So much for the Four Way Test.
The high point of the meeting was the awarding of the Multiple Paul Harris medal to PP Ric dela Torre by IPP Tony Pastelero as part of his reward for being chosen as “RCMN Rotarian of the Year” for RY 2005-2006. Congratulations, Daisy.

My dear fellow Rotarians with RC Makati North:
Let’s focus on the District’s Annual TRF Testimonial Dinner & Ball, one of the District’s premier Rotary event, that is fast approaching. Again —- the event date and time is Nov. 13, 2009, Friday at 6 pm and venue is at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila. Tickets to the event: P1,000/guest to cover dinner, raffle, & entertainment.
The following information should give you an idea of the extent of RCMN’s participation, so far, in the coming days and up to the actual date of the event:
KARL STUART McKINNON McLEAN
Born in Gibraltar , August 1, 1955 where my dad ran Shell refinery then moved with my family to Hamburg, then London , followed by Holland where I spent 8 years of my life as my father was on the main board of Shell in London.
I went to a Dutch school which was fabulous as the Dutch are the “freeist” nation in the world. As class prefect I sat on the school board with teachers and parents and my vote had the same power as the teachers.
I played a lot of soccer and earlier cricket.
