Positive Endeavors of ECOP
By: PP Dieter Brueckner
We had an amazing joint meeting with the RC Makati Ayala and RC Makati Forbes Park. We heard several complements about the food.
We were pumped up in such a positive way, that Pres. Porong Herrera took the initiative and invited spontaneously Rtn. Eduardo Escaño (Director, Treasurer of RCMFP) to become our speaker for the meeting sometime in November. Additionally, but informally, the Presidents agreed to continue to hold such joint meetings once a Quarter.
On our table we commented about Rotary’ evolution for the last twenty years. Aside from having numerous more Rotary Clubs, the presence of women in Rotary may be the most significant development.
We experienced an original icebreaker practiced at RC Forbes Park. After the call to order, everyone is invited to move around and shake hands with all other attendees to the meeting. In such a way we introduced ourselves to everyone in a more personal way. Effective.
The speaker was cool. Very cool. Now we know a bit more about the influence specific fraternities at UP have on their members and we also learned about IPP Tony Pastelero’s new client, a very powerful politician in fact.
ECOP contributes strongly to nation building efforts, defending the point that labor and social issues should be under the exclusively private responsibility. Thanks to the efforts (and lobbying) of the ECOP, certain law initiatives were not approved. For example, to have an employee sitting on the corporate board or a compulsory profit sharing.
Some other positive endeavors of ECOP are directed towards updating the labor code, wage fixing should be based on productivity and competitiveness and not imposed by Government, foreign investors should be oriented on Philippine culture and it’s impact on the corporate world.
The guest speaker acceded graciously to answer questions from the Rotarian as long as the Rotarians would not question his answers (uuhh).

Before anything else, allow me to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.
Perhaps not a few of you are tired of getting this greeting, which probably swamped your mobile phone and e-mail mailboxes. Given the challenges ahead – the global crisis, its repercussions here, the run-up to the next national elections, and others – maybe it will help to hear more well wishes.
So, happy New Year, damn it!
Seriously, the gloomy forecast suggests that this year Rotary is more relevant. Many of us are already feeling the pinch, and the others are probably bracing themselves for the worst. But in a sense, we are still the lucky ones. Imagine the hardship and anxiety of those with lesser means. No matter how difficult our situation is now, there always seems to be someone else somewhere experiencing something worse.
